Near-surface geochemical processes in Quaternary sediments

A. DAHMKE, G. MATTHESS, A. PEKDEGER, D. SCHENK and H. D. SCHULZ

Institute of Geology and Paleontology, University of Kiel, Olshausenstr. 40/60, Då2300 Kiel, FRG

Pore water analyses and mineralogical investigations from the unsaturated zone of Quaternary glacial outwash sediments were carried out to investigate the major geochemical reactions that control the chemistry of seepage and groundwater. The kinetics of rock/water interaction especially that of dissolution/precipitation are strongly influenced by secondary minerals and amorphous phases on grain surfaces. The role of buffer systems such as calcite dissolution, ion exchange and silicate weathering is discussed with help of a lumped model. The kinetics of these systems and the methods for their investigation are presented.
