A new agnathan-dominated biota found near Louisburgh, Co. Mayo in the west of Ireland is correlated with post-Llandovery biotas of the Midland Valley of Scotland (MVS). It is argued that this biotic similarity implies a 500 km elongate aquatic connection between the two areas. An alternative hypothesis, that the fault-bounded Irish outcrop is a displaced terrane, originally in closer contiguity with the MVS inliers is rejected. This results from a detailed structural analysis of the bounding fault (Emlagh Thrust), which constrains the post-Llandovery strike-slip motion to less than 25 km.
