The influence of tectonics on early Cretaceous sedimentation in Bedfordshire, England

The Lower Cretaceous sediments of the Bedfordshire area are Aptian and Albian in age. During this time the area was situated within an extensional tectonic regime, and the pattern of sedimentation, in terms of lateral variation both in sediment type and thickness, reflects the influence of normal faulting. Jurassic topography, created by block faulting and erosion, controlled the distribution of later facies largely by continued tectonic processes, especially the reactivation of the Jurassic fault block system, which produced syn-sedimentary faulting of the overlying sequence. Thus the ‘traditional’ view of the infill of an erosional basin by the Lower Greensand is challenged.
